Restoration is a specialised service that Subtle Finish offer. Peter has over 25 years experience as a restorer of antique gilt mirrors, picture frames and furniture and has had his restored pieces find homes in palaces, art galleries, embassies, stately homes and many private homes in London and around the world. 

Our techniques and methods for restoration, gilding and speciality finishes are still largely based on those that were used in the 18th and 19th Century. Gold leaf, gesso, rabbit skin glue and natural earth pigments are a few of the key ingredients used in some of the processes but there are also secret recipes that artisans use that will never be revealed.  

At Subtle Finish we not only restore gilt mirrors and furniture but also plain wooden furniture too. We offer unique finishes that can revive the dullest of brown furniture and can arrange re-upholstery with a great collection of fabric samples in the shop to choose from.
